We are a breeder of gorgeous CKC Registered F1 Miniature Goldendoodles (female Golden Retriever bred to a male Toy Poodle), CKC F1 Miniature Labradoodles (female Labrador Retriever bred to a male Toy Poodle) and CKC F1b Toy Goldendoodles (female Miniature Goldendoodle bred to a male Toy Poodle – we use a Toy Poodle in both crosses). This year will be the start of our F1 Miniature Labradoodle and F1b Toy Goldendoodle breeding program. Up to this point, we have only bred F1 Miniature Goldendoodles. All of our dogs are both AKC and CKC registered except for our Miniature Goldendoodles. They are registered with only the CKC because the AKC does not recognize Goldendoodles.
Our small kennel located in Central Ohio on almost six acres in the country. This is my fulltime job, although I do not consider it work. I am home at all times with our dogs unless I am taking the kids to extra curricular activities or running errands. This time at home has allowed each of our dogs to bond closely with our family, and become cherished family pets. Our family consists of myself, my husband, our 3 children (all teenagers), 3 cats, 2 horses, 9 chickens and of course our dogs (who are all are amazing, loyal companions and friends – basically members of our family).
We have carefully chosen each dog in our breeding program. They have been chosen not just for health in their lines, but also for body type and most importantly for temperament. We would never breed a dog that we do not consider a great family pet. This has given us puppies that are both intelligent and great with people. Our Toy Poodles are Petey and Cody. Cody is an offsite stud who lives with my step-daughter and her family as their pet. Two active studs in the same house can sometimes get hectic. This arrangement allows us access to two Poodles who both have champion lines. Our Toy Poodles have a very “square” build, with nice, long legs. They are producing puppies that are proportionate. Our retired stud Bogie was producing some adorable puppies with very short legs. We affectionately called them “low riders”, and they all went to wonderful loving families. I was working towards more of the Retriever proportions though. As our breeding program has progressed, I have been able to refine the look that I wanted in our puppies. Due to the stud dogs that we are now using, every Griffith Kennels puppy has champion lines, and more of a proportionate Retriever-like build.
Our two Golden Retrievers are Olivia and Gracie. Both have great personalities and beautiful blocky heads. Bella and Emme are our Labrador Retrievers. Both are loving, come from champion English lines and have beautiful blocky heads. Our two Goldendoodles are Gabby and Calli. Gabby is an Olivia baby and Calli is a Gracie baby. Both were sired by Cody and are as sweet as can be. They will be bred to Petey and produce F1B Miniature Goldendoodles in the future.
Each of the dogs are loved and socialized daily. The big girls take turns spending time in the house. We have added some kennels in our attached garage, and now have two fenced in areas for our dogs. One is off of the patio door, and is for the little dogs. The other is off of the garage and has a doggie door into the garage so that the big dogs can come in and out as they please.
Our garage has a propane heater and is insulated, so the girls are always comfortable even on cold winter nights. On nice days, we enjoy taking dogs to the park. Because these dogs are our pets, we try to make sure that they are having fun and enjoying life. Their health is also very important. We keep their immunizations up to date, and have them on both heartworm and flea preventative. We have recently started the dogs on Nature’s Select dog food, and I am very pleased with the results. Their coats are soft and shiny, and I have been able to stop the vitamin and fish oil supplements that I used to keep coats healthy in the past. Our girls are not bred every heat cycle, and receive a well deserved “breeding break” after every two breedings. If I ever have a concern about the health of a dog, she will not be bred.
The health of our pregnant and nursing dogs is critical to the health of our puppies. For that reason, we start supplementing their diets with puppy food, meat and cottage cheese about half way into their pregnancy. This is continued until puppies are weaned and our mothers are looking and feeling good. We do not leave our girls when they are getting close to labor. All of our puppies are born in a baby pool in our family room under our close supervision. It is a family affair, and the kids stay home to help. Each puppy is identified with a different colored neckband at birth. This allows us to weigh them daily for the first two weeks, and then every couple of days after that. If a puppy does not gain weight one day, we are aware of it before it becomes a problem. We can then make sure that they are nursing well for the next few days. All of our babies receive a nickname at birth. This just seems more affectionate than puppy one, two and three and helps us to bond with them. Of course these names are just for our weight charts and records, so you will rename them when they join your family. Our puppies are not left unattended during the first 2 weeks after birth. We even sleep in shifts to make sure each puppy is safe. Because we use a Toy Poodle as stud, our puppies are much smaller than the average Retriever puppy would be at birth. By about two weeks of age they are at a size that we don’t have to worry as much about them being squished by a mother who is not aware of the fact she is laying on one of them. That is when I return to my own bed at night and get more sleep. We take our responsibility to our dogs and puppies seriously. They are counting on us!
